Diwali Diyas

Diwali is the festival of light therefore Diyas (oil lamps) aka Deepaks hold an extremely unique and important place in Diwali celebrations. It’s for the same reason that Diwali is popularly referred as Deepavali which literally means a row of lamps. It would be safe to say that you cannot really celebrate Diwali without lighting a Diya. Illuminating diyas is an inseparable part of Diwali celebration.

Lighting a diya may signify different things for different people depending upon which part of India they are from. The most common belief is that by lighting a diya you are dispelling the darkness i.e. negativity and inviting light i.e. knowledge, success, and prosperity into your life.

Diwali Diyas, depending upon what they are made of, can be classified as below:

• Clay Diyas
• Wax Diyas
• Gold Diyas
• Silver Diyas
• Brass Diyas
• Electric Lamps

Clay / Earthen Diyas

The commonly available Diwali diyas are earthen. Though nowadays you can buy a variety of diyas, a traditional diya which is still most preferred is made of clay. It uses oil or ghee for fuel and cotton wool for a wick. It could wear the plain look and natural color of the clay or may have the designer touch to it. Kids particularly like the colorful diyas having interesting designs on them. As far as the shape is concerned most of the clay diyas have the similar heart-like shape but some do wear more creative looks. The sizes however largely vary. The price of earthen diyas depends upon their size and featured design, if any.

Many people also make fresh Diwali diyas with wheat or rice dough. Usually, they are used as complimentary set not as a replacement for earthen diyas.

Wax Diyas

Wax diyas are new to Diwali but they are becoming hugely popular. These lamps use wax as fuel instead of oil or ghee. They come in very eye catchy designs and shape. Some wax diyas are completely made of wax and are designed to float in water. These diyas come in bright color combinations so are quick to catch your eyes. Just the sheer variety of wax diyas impresses a Diwali shopper. Some may even find the choice a bit overwhelming.

Wax diyas are considered modern and a growing trend. A pack of wax diyas can also make a modern Diwali gift.

Gold, Silver, & Brass Diyas

Metallic diyas also hold a special significance on Diwali. The most common metallic diyas include Gold Diyas, Silver Diyas and Brass Diyas. While these diyas are sort of permanent they are expensive as well. Those who can afford won’t settle for anything less than a gold or silver diya as it depicts prosperity.

Metallic diyas are most interesting ones in the sense that they not only come in different shapes but may also be adorned with religious symbols, idols of goddess Laxmi, Durga, etc. or something purely for décor. Metallic diyas are usually held in metallic cup or plate. Some diyas can be placed on the ground or table while others are designed to be hanging. The hanging diyas are used especially in the worship area of the house or community temples.

The common shapes of metallic diya include Leaf Diya, Flower Diya, Goblet Diya, and Five Wicks Diyas. Also, Swastik Diyas, Ganesh Diyas, Laxmi Diyas and Durga diyas are quite popular.

Electric Lamps

Electric lamps have also made to modern Diwali celebrations. People decorate their entry gates, doors, and roof tops with electric lamps. The colorful electric lamps of various sizes and designs add a whole new zing to the festivity atmosphere.

With so many choices it may be difficult to zero in on one diya but remember that ultimately it’s the Diwali spirit that matters. So enjoy and have a blast this Diwali!
