What is GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a technology that was originally developed by the US department of defense as a global navigation satellite system. A set of sattelites orbiting the earth support the functioning of GPS devices. The GPS receivers are tuned to GPS sattelites. They calculate their exact position, time, and valocity by utilizing the positioning information received from these GNSS satellites in the orbit.  The GPS system was commercially introduced in 1993 and is now widely used for navigational purposes around the globe.

GPS in Cars

The GPS installed in a vehicle can be used to calculate  the location, direction, and elevation, etc. This requires that the GPS receiver on the vehicle to receive the signals from the satellites. The GPS devices come in two types –

  • In-Dash GPS System
  • Portable GPS System

Most of the car manufacturers offer pre-installed option so you have to live with their model, however, the portable devises provide you with many options to choose from.

Factors to consider when buying a GPS system

Screen – The screen size and the screen quality are two important factors in choosing a GPS device. Because you are going to use this device while you are driving and the light conditions may not always be favourable. The bigger the screen the easier it is for you to see the map without taking your eyes off the road for a longer time. The better color screen would help you see the screen in all light conditions without inconvenience.

Single/Multiple Maps – If you are planning to use the GPS system for traveling across many states then it is important that your GPS system is loaded with a map of all the states (nationwide map). The version of the map loaded on the GPS system should also be latest so that you have access to the latest street addresses. The cost to update the map down the road should also be reasonable or at least possible.

Portablity – If you plan to use the device in multiple vehicles then you should pick a product that gives you flexibility to remove and install the device in multiple locations.

Other Nice to have Features – Many other cool features that are nice to have (but come with a premium price) in a GPS system are - hands-free calling with Bluetooth-compatible cell phones, FM transmission that announces turns and directions over your car stereo, an audio/video/photo viewer (your kids would love it), automatic rerouting if you miss to take the right turn, auxiliary antennas, and the ability to send and receive text messages.
