When the whole world is caring about environment friendliness how could the laptops be any far behind? In fact environmental sustainability has taken unprecedented precedence over any other reason for designing the laptops with an altogether new motto.

Almost every major laptop manufacturer wants to make sure that its products are green and energy efficient. Similarly, the buyers also demand eco-friendly and wallet-friendly products that leave a smaller carbon footprint. Thanks to the non-stop news and media campaigns for urging masses to go-green (See why buy a green laptop). But when you actually go about the procedure of picking a green laptop the situation seems to get a bit complicated.

How do you know what you are picking is actually green and how green? Can you simply go by the claims of the manufacturer? Are their any third party/independent assessors who can give you an unbiased judgment on the greenness of the laptops? And eventually, which ones are the best laptops in terms of greenness that are worth buying?

EPEAT and Energy Star:

There basically are two signs that can help you pick on the real green laptop. EPEAT based on IEEE 1680 family of standards for the electronic product enviromental assessment evaluates laptops against predefined criteria and rates them for their ‘greenness’ as Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Energy Star a joint program of US EPA and Department of Energy is another reliable rating that can be trusted to offer the right information. Energy Star 4.0 has been the sign of energy efficiency so far and the latest version 5.0 because of its stringent requirements is going to be an even better enabler in decision making.

Top Green Laptops:

Every laptop brand has green laptops as part of its offerings. Some have been given more emphasis by offering designated series of green laptops whereas most have been trying to stick to standard criteria to get the best possible green ratings for different laptops.

Apple claims that its MacBook Pro is world’s greenest collection of notebooks. The reason for that is the fact that it is made from recyclable glass and aluminum. It doesn’t have most of the usual toxins and does look promising as a green laptop. Many other manufacturers make more or less similar claims but the best option is to stick to EPEAT and Energy Star endorsements for specific laptop models.

Lenovo offers some of the top ranking green laptops in the market. Lenovo ThinkPad X301 has an EPEAT Gold certification, which just over a dozen other laptops can boast of. Lenovo ThinkPad T400 is also one worth buy green laptop. ASUS Eee PC 1000HE has internal design elements that function and manage energy consumption in a way that makes it environment friendly to the core. ASUS U6V Bamboo is another recently launched exquisite green laptop.

With EPEAT Gold certification and Energy Star 4.0 compliance Toshiba Protégé A600 can be your safest bet if buying a laptop with maximum environment friendliness is your first concern. If you want choice in terms of different manufactures, then some of the other notable green laptops are Dell Studio XPS 13, ASUS N50v and HP 2730p Tablet.

You can simply take your pick and contribute your own bit towards the greener earth too.
