Laptops for Home Users

Just because a home computer stays in-doors, doesn't mean it cannot look hot and sexy.

laptopThe old myth that desktops are better for home use is being defied by many home computer users. The new computer buyers prefer buying a laptop over a bulky desktop. There are multiple reasons that are fueling the trend -

Falling Prices: The laptop prices have fallen to an affordable scale. The price war among the competing computer manufacturers, among other things, is driving the prices low.

Wide Range: Laptops are available in a wide range of sizes, features and prices. Today, you don't have to pay for something you know you don't really need. Laptop models are configured to meet certain requirement and are priced accordingly.

Portability: Who would not prefer a light weight portable device over a bulky household item that eats up more space and requires more hands to move around? Portability is the biggest reason why laptops are kings today.

Maintenance: If a laptop goes bad, you can easily take it to a repair shop but if a desktop gives up the repair is also a big hassle. Often you just stare at the box or slap it on the sides hoping for some magic and then wait for that fine morning when you can visit a repair shop. With laptops, you simply pack and go.

Generally, any laptop meets the needs of a home user. The laptop configuration will depend upon what all you want to accomplish with your laptop at home. We recommend a few things that you should consider before buying a laptop for home use.

  1. 1GB RAM - 512MB will soon start feeling too slow. 1GB will meet your needs for longer term.
  2. 160GB Hard drive - You need space for all those digital photographs, home videos, games, and whatever else you might like to preseve.
  3. Wireless and wired networking - You want the flexibility to use internet from anywhere in and around your home.
  4. 14.1" or bigger screen - At home bigger the better. If you want to enjoy games and movies on your laptop, a big wide screen would be a good choice.
  5. DVD Burner - If you don't plan to travel out with your laptop, get an embedded DVD burner. It will add some weight but it will make it very easy to create DVDs of home videos and photographs.

Finally, don't forget to get at least one year warranty. Whether it's a desktop or laptop, the machine problems are inevitable. Warranty will ensure you have help available just a phone call away.
