Motorola RAZR, the ultra thin mobile phone, captured the fancy of mobile buyers when it debuted in 2007. Two years later, the communication company finds itself in a not so rosy situation. Its mobile market share has been consistently shrinking. Razr is now a seen-that used-that phone. Motorola desperately needed a winner mobile to help turn things around in its favor. Is the just launched Motorola Cliq that talisman?

Motorola's very first android phone started making rumors a couple of months ago. It has finally arrived in 3G capable Cliq but can the company make a real comeback riding Google Android euphoria? Wait! It's not Android in its purity. The company has enhanced the Google platform by adding MotoBlur layer to it to make phone more customizable.

The phone offers various features that are now becoming prevalent viz message threading and home screen widget personalization. Palm Pre pioneered message threading where you could see a consolidated view of a conversation no matter how it took place – over the email, IM, or SMS. Palm Pixi, Nokia 7705 Twist are the other recently launched cell phones that embody message threading.  Widget personalization is something that HTC brought with its HTC Sense and is available in phones like HTC Hero and more recently in HTC Tattoo. It allows you to customize your phone's home screen by moving pulling in the widgets of your taste and arranging them in the order you like to see them. So Motorola Cliq is definitely not unique here. However, the phone does offer a few new powers that can win some hearts.

One feature that I liked in Motorola Cliq is the ability to update my status in all popular social network sites in a single step. Not that others can't duplicate it but this is surely a time-saving feature that the cell phone maker deserves credit for. One doesn't have to log in to Facebook, then to MySpace, and then to Twitter just to say the same things (like -- my mobile life is thrilling). It also lets you receive all your messages – be an SMS, Email, IM, or SNS alert – in a single message widget. Additionally, the phone gives you a quick view of your friends' activity on various social networking sites right on your home screen. These capabilities will excite those who spend good amount of time on social networks. They can also help Cliq standout in a crowded smartphone marketplace.

Featuring a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, image editing, and geo-tagging features, the phone does win in media functions. It gives you music player that supports all popular audio formats. You can enjoy video capture and playback, video streaming on its 3.1 HVGA full-touch screen. The phone also has 3.5 mm headset jack, bluetooth connectivity, support for MS Exchange, and of course you get all the Google services like Maps, Gmail, Search etc.

The device comes with 2GB internal memory but lets you expand it up to 32GB. It comes pre-loaded with Amazon MP3 store application. Being built on Android platform you can download any app of your choosing from Google Android marketplace.

Cliq will be available in Titanium and Winter White colors in the US market from T-Mobile later this fall. In India and other markets the phone will be sold under a different name i.e. Motorola Dext. We'll update you as soon as the pricing information is made available.
