Palm Pre - New iPhone Challenger?

Before Apple could come out and announce its new iPhone 3GS, Palm had an answer ready in Palm Pre. A new smart phone from the house of Palm that took many by surprise. The Palm Pre Phone in nutshell has the best of both Apple iPhone and RIM Blackberry - the nice big touch screen of iPhone and the comfy full keyboard of Blackberry. Now, that is smart, isn't it? But before you call it a copy-cat, Palm Pre does unfold its own innovation by bringing some cool features like combining all your online calendars (read Google, Outlook, Facebook) into one quick view of your day.

Palm Pre

Activity Cards

When I first used Apple Safari to browse the web, the web appeared as though it were a deck of cards, I was totally amazed. It felt like a feature that only Apple could think of. But Palm proves that Apple is not alone in having that cool design sense. Palm has brought a similar feature to the tiny screen of its Pre. Palm Pre treats various open applications as activity cards. For example you may have Email, Calendar, Maps open you can switch between them, roll them around, or completely toss them off the screen.

Easy Calendar / Contact Management

Generally our business and personal contact information is scattered all over Palm Prethe web. Depending upon our job and lifestyle we may be maintaining multiple calendars. Managing these multiple information centers only adds to the pain of this 21st century's busy life. Thanks to Palm. It not only sensed the pain but also brought a painkiller for it - the layered calendars and linked contacts. This feature brings the event entries from all the popular calendars like Google, Facebook, and Outlook and shows you an unified view of your day. It also links the same contacts from across different sources so you could find them easily.

Message Threads

This one is from Gmail. The world fell in love with Gmail for it brought a new feature that groups an email communication as though it were a continuous chat message stream. Palm Pre does the same thing with your messaging. It ropes in the messages originated from the IM as well. This feature makes tracking and finding messages very convenient.

Photos, Music, Videos, & iTunes

Palm Pre not only supports the standard 3 megapixel camera, music/video player, it takes the competition to another level by actually offering a feature to transfer iTunes music to Pre. It's the iTune transfer that might give Apple some sleepless nights.

Backup, Erase, Restore Data

Palm users can take advantage of the Palm Service to automatically backup their important data. The data can be restored at any time. In case the phone is lost, the service allows you to erase all your data.
