What's a smartphone

Home> Blogs> Mobile Phones> What's a smartphone

A smartphone combines the capabilities of both a mobile phone and a computer in a single handheld device.

A smartphone is different than a computer as, unlike a computer, it can be used for regular telephonic communication. What makes it smarter than a traditional mobile phone is that it comes with local storage, operating system, and advanced processor. These characterists of a smartphone make it programmable just like computers and that expands it capabilities way beyond a traditional mobile phone.

You can store data on smartphones and retrieve it at will. You can install new software applications and utilities. You can use the phone for hosts of other things like Email, Chat, and Web Surfing. If you are a software engineer you could write your own custom applications to do virtually everything that you can make a computer do. It's a pretty powerful handheld machine.

The Oxford American Dictionary defines a smartphone as a mobile phone that incorporates the capabilities of a PDA (personal digital assistant). Therefore a smartphone can be termed as a converged device that can perform multiple functions.

The smartphones have redefined what a mobile handset can do. From the very first generation (1G) dumb terminals that just offered wireless voice communication to modern 3G phones that support audio/video streaming along with the data communication, mobile phones have come a long way.

Smartphones continue to get smarter. Latest smartphones from Google, Apple, and Motorola feature 1GHz CPU which is quite a processing power in such a compact device. Generally, the memory can be expanded to 32 GB which is more than what computers used to offer until just a few years ago. Smartphones come equipped with internet connectivity anytime anywhere - you of course need to buy the data plan to leverage it.

Apart from bringing the computing power to the tiny handset, there are many other features that are common in today's smartphones. For example, camera (both for photography and video recording), producitivity software such as word editor and email, GPS for finding directions and maps. There is plenty that a smartphone offers today. The screen sizes haven't grown as much however these phones utilize the space much more carefully leaving as much room for the screen as possible. The virtual keyboard in a smartphone is an example of how space that would go for the physical permanent keyboard is mostly left for the screen display.

Social media features are also very common in smartphones. Especially the simpler low cost smartphones simply add the social media features on top of a basic phone. But as you go towards high end phones, you'll get more bells and whistles.

Smartphone is in deed the future of phone.
