A good Air Conditioner can make even worst of summers pleasant. And an energy efficient, environmental friendly AC can additionally keep the electricity bills small and the environment safe.
University of California Davis (UC Davis) launched a novel Western Cooling Challenge program, almost an year ago, aimed at cutting the electricity consumed by roof-top ACs in western United States by 40%. The idea was to encourage AC manufacturers to produce better quality and energy efficient ACs and to promote the usage of such improved Air Conditioning units among the building owners.
The Coolerado Corp. of Denver has become the first AC manufacturer to win the “Western Cooling Challenge”. The federal tests on Coolerado's five ton commercial roof-tip AC unit indicate that it can cool a big-box store by consuming less than half the energy of a conventional air conditioners. That's more than what UC Davis was hoping for.
"Coolerado's entry in the Western Cooling Challenge was the first to take our rigorous tests at the Advanced HVAC Lab at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory," said Mark Modera, director of the UC Davis Western Cooling Efficiency Center.
"We are extremely pleased to announce that Coolerado's product exceeded our expectations. While our target was a 40 percent reduction in energy use and peak electricity demand compared to conventional cooling units, the Coolerado H-80 tests indicate almost 80 percent energy-use savings and over 60 percent peak-demand reduction."
The basis for the challenge was that even though most of the western states of US are hot and dry they use ACs that are designed for warm and humid climate. They challengers felt that cooling in hot and dry climate can be achieved at the expense of lesser energy.
Coolerado is happy to have participated in the cooling challenge and qualified to start producing H-80 AC systems for 2010 sale.
We haven't seen similar programs in India yet however AC makers like Voltas and Samsung are gearing up to offer more energy efficient air conditioning solutions both for residential as well as commercial buildings.
