Summer Survival Kit: AC, Inverter, Fan, and Water

Home> Blogs> Air Conditioner Buying Guide> Summer Survival Kit: AC, Inverter, Fan, and Water

In the middle of the night when there is a power cut, your room air conditioner makes that familiar jittery sound and stops abruptly. You have an inverter but best it can do is enable a fan to rotate lazily over your head for a while. It lacks the stamina to carry you through the ordeal. Once the inverter gives up, fan blades also stand stunned staring at you helplessly. Temperature soars to uncomfortable levels and you despise not only summer but everything and everyone around you. Humidity comes to haunt you. You join your hands in prayer but soon you realize that prayers don’t yield anything other than frustration. So you rush to your bathroom to find some water to cool your head down. On the way you curse overpopulation of India for causing frequent power cuts, and the government for not acting swiftly to fix the power shortage. You try to catch some sleep convincing yourself that in the heat of the summer and in the land of India, choices are limited. But sultry night denies you an uninterrupted and peaceful sleep.

If you have been experiencing nights like that, you can find some relief knowing that you are not alone. Millions of Indians find summers most trying season of the year. The arrival of low cost windows and split air conditioners have helped but have also increased the power consumption in the power deficient nation which evidently results in more frequent power cuts. Whether you live in Delhi, the capital city of India, or in a remote town, power cuts are common. And as much as we hate them, we have to live with them until India increases its power production significantly. So what can we do to better endure these power cuts?First of all, if you are spending on an inverter go for a good quality power inverter that can buy you at least two hours of backup. Check its capacity – it should allow you to run a fan at a minimum in all bedrooms. Make sure it’s maintained well for sustained efficiency. Get it professionally examined every year before the onset of summer. A healthy inverter is your only reliable companion during power outage so invest wisely on it.

When your AC is on, close any windows and doors to trap the cool air in the room. If you lose power, a closed room will stay cool for longer. Otherwise you will feel the brunt of the heat instantly. When the coolness of the air evaporates you can open all windows and doors to let your outside cooler air come in.

If nothing works, you can always fall back to old ways of cooling. That is to hang a water-soaked linen sheet, or a towel, in the window. It absorbs the heat entering the room leaving it cooler. Since water supply is also unreliable just as power, remember to keep a bucket full of water for emergency situations such as this.

Summers are harsh, especially in northern India. But a good Air Conditioner, Power Inverter, Ceiling Fan, and proper preparation on our part can help make it lesser challenging.
