Windows AC vs. Split AC

Home> Blogs> Air Conditioner Buying Guide> Windows AC vs. Split AC

Air Conditioners not only vary in features, prices and sizes, but also in the underlying design type. Let's explore the two popular AC  types i.e. Windows AC and Split AC.

Window AC

Ya! you have seen it hanging out of many house windows. This is the most prevalent and economical air conditioner system. It sits in a window with its rear releasing hot air into the environment and cool air into the room. The air in the room is cooled as a fan blows it on the cool evaporator unit. The condenser releases the hot air outside. The controls are obviously on the side that faces inwards.

The components of a Windows AC include -

  1. Compressor
  2. Expansion Valve
  3. Hot Condenser Coil (Exterior)
  4. Cold Evaporator Coil (Interior)
  5. Two Fans
  6. Control Unit

Modern Window ACs have improved in design and shape so they don't look like monsters hanging in the windows ready to crash on passerby's head. They have grown compact and elegant and you actually want them peeping out so your neighbors can see how cool your AC is.

Window ACs are great for home usage. Whirlpool, LG, Voltas, Electrolux, Samsung are some of the popular Window AC brands.

Split AC

Split AC as the name tells is designed in such a way that the two key functions of the AC are split into two compartments. One is hot-side i.e. compressor condenser unit and other is cool-side i.e. the expansion valve and the evaporator unit.

The spliting of the two units allows one to install the cooling unit inside and the hot noisy unit outside. Since two units are separate individually they can be larger and thus the AC can be easily designed to be more powerful than the windows AC. Windows ACs have size limitation and therefore they cannot exceed certain capacity.

Since the compressor condenser unit can be installed outside the building, inside the air conditioner feels calm and quiet. Split ACs are excellent option for office use and for large commercial buildings. Due to their compact size and dropped prices Split ACs are becoming popular even for household usage.

The Split ACs don't work well in case of multi-story buildings where connecting the room units with the exterior condenser becomes a difficult task.

Let's compare the two:

  • Price: Nowadays there is not much price difference between a Windows and split AC. For example Whirlpool 1 ton split AC costs almost same as Whirlpool 1.5 ton Windows AC. Window ACs start from rupees 13,000 whereas the starting price for Split ACs is somwhere around rupees 164,000 - really not much difference.
  • Size: Split AC is much smaller than the windows AC.
  • Power: You can buy the power by spending more in either case however the Split ACs give a wider range.
  • Noise: Split ACs are quieter than the Windows ACs. But many latest Window Air Conditioners come with noise absorbers which makes them lesser noisy.
  • Variety: Split ACs would probably win when it comes to the available brands and models.
  • Installation: Window AC fits into the wall or window so the dimensions have to be carefully chosen. If your window size is not standard then you might need to have some work done to make just enough room for installing the air conditioner. Split AC on the other hand doesn't even require a window in the room. It does however require a hole for the pipe that connects the inner AC unit to the outer one. At least in case of Split AC installation you need professional hand.
