Tips for Choosing the Right Perfume

A majority of people claim that they know which perfume suits them best. Believe me, the reality is otherwise. In a majority of cases, people go with the advice of their friends, colleagues or peers and select the scent approved by them. Or, more generally, once people find a particular suitable fragrance, they stop experimenting and miss out on the chance of having something better and more beautiful and pleasing to their olfactory nerves. Choosing the right perfume is not an easy task. It is an art, at best. Let’s talk about how to choose the right one for you so that you shine when you go out in the world.

First, why people use perfumes in the first place? The sense of smell is an important factor in determining our preferences and choices. People who smell fresh and nice are almost always appreciated by others as against people who do not care enough about how they smell. Further, wearing a nice scent acts as a mood elevator and gives you a strange sense of confidence. Fragrance actually comes in four forms: Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Perfume.

Cologne tends to contain about 7% essence dissolved in alcohol of 60º or 70º. It is delightfully refreshing in hot weather and because it doesn't last long, it can be frequently reapplied directly to the skin. Toilette contains about 10% aromatic essence, parfum about 20%. The fourth one, called the perfume extract or extrait is the most expensive one. This has the whole symphony of top, heart and base notes released over an extended period of time. The concentration of fragrance can reach up to 35% in a perfume. It is applied in small amounts.

A perfume is made up of different notes. Basically, these notes are released one by one as time progresses after the application of perfume. The Top Note is the immediate smell of the perfume, carried upwards by the alcohol evaporating out of the perfume. The Middle Note is the main body of the scent. The Base Note is comprised of the heaviest and largest molecules of the perfume and last the longest, sometimes as long as twenty-four hours after application. The top note lasts about 30 minutes, the middle note about 4 hours and the base note for about a day.

Some factors need to be taken into account while buying a perfume. First, test the perfume directly on your skin and not on perfume paper. Test it on your pulse points like the inner side of your wrist or the neck area. Avoid testing near jewelry as the alcohol reacts with the metal (of jewelry). Don’t go by peer pressure. Trust your own instinct. Perfume is all about individuality and not about following the herd. And, please do not rub the scent after applying it on your skin. This way, you crush the molecular structure which was so tirelessly built by fragrance experts and the perfume may show unexpected results.

Smell the applied testing perfume after every two hours for about a period of 10 hours. This way, you will be acquainted with the very soul of the perfume. Last, but not the least, do not spray too much of it else it would give you a headache. Perfume is highly concentrated and should be sprayed in very small amounts in the pulse regions (neck, inner wrists, elbow, etc.).
