5 Small Steps Towards a Greener Home

These days, in the mad rush of making both ends meet and the constant worry of fattening our bank balances, we have lost something in the process. Take a look at your house and the society/colony in which you live and try to compare it with the view which you used to have when you were a kid. You’ll notice that the houses have become more majestic, flat culture prevails and basic amenities are easily available just around the block. But wait! Something is missing. Yep! They greenery which you were so fond of when you were a kid is missing. According to me, there is no better rejuvenation than walking barefoot on the dewy grass in the morning or having a good game of badminton in your lawn. Further, we don’t recycle things and care less about consuming electricity with brevity. Well, don’t get disheartened. Things can be changed for the better with a little effort and care. Let’s discuss 5 steps towards a greener house.

1. Green Lawn: If you live in a spacious house, you always have the option of maintaining a nice lawn. Plant a few flowery plants, a couple of saplings which can grow into trees which bear fruit and have the rest of the area of your lawn covered with grass (available in many varieties. Pick one which suits you). It’s a proven fact that having a lawn in the front portion of the house helps reduce the stuffiness of the house and reduces the overall temperature of the house to a couple of degrees.

2. Flower Pots: If you do not have that much space, then you can always maintain a few plants in flower pots. A bit of greenery and vivid colors (of flowers) is sure to have a mood elevating effect on the entire household. Choose plants which do not require much water. This is because sometimes you may forget to water the plants and they would wither away if they require watering regularly.

3. Avoid Electricity Wastage: A particular habit which wastes a huge amount of money in every country is forgetting to unplug the electric appliances/gadgets after use. Standby power, also called Vampire power refers to the electric power consumed by electronic appliances in a standby mode. When not in use, simply unplug the appliance. This is particularly true of the cell phone chargers. People just unplug the cell phone from the charger when they are done and leave the charger as it is. Unplugging appliances also has a safety benefit. During lightning or huge voltage fluctuations, appliances may get damaged if they are plugged in. Unplugging the appliance relieves you from this risk.

4. Help Recycle: Do not dump every possible waste into a single trashcan. Use two of them. One which stores all the recyclable material and the other which stores the non-recyclable. Recycling does great benefits to the environment. Recycling a fat roll of paper effectively saves a tree.

5. Conserve Water: Do not waste water unnecessarily. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Use a bucket while washing your car. If possible, install a rain water harvesting system. Further, place your study table or working desk near the window so as to take the benefit of sunlight. Why waste money on electricity during the day when sunlight is ample and free? Sunlight also has a cleansing effect. The bacteria and a variety of other germs vanish if exposed to a good amount of sunlight during the day.

Last but not the least, don’t just follow these measures. Teach them to your kids as well. The future resides with them.
