A camcorder is an electronic video camera and recording device. It makes it easy to record precious moments, in digital or analog form, and to relive them with family and friends.

Like any other technology product, camcorders have evolved into sophisticated gadgets. Today, it’s not just about capturing those incredible life moments into videos, it’s about revisiting life in high definition mode. It’s about being able to touch and edit the recordings to make them much more intriguing – adding background scores and commentary and creating interesting collages in a breeze. It’s also about the ability to play the recorded videos back, and to share them with family and friends. A modern camcorder with all its powers enables us to look at life from an entirely new perspective.

The variety of camcorders available in the market is incredible. You’ll find many attractive and innovative camcorder models. While buying a camcorder you’ll have to evaluate your options on various fronts viz. technology, design, portability, price, and feature set. There are many camcorders that offer incredible feature set.

Options like Digital Camcorder, MiniDV, DVD Camcorder, Camcorder with Hard Drive; brands like Sony, Panasonic, Canon, JVC, Samsung, Kodak; the choices are definitely unlimited but the accompanying confusion can at times be the more dominating concern for the buyers. So we decided to put together a list of aspects you must bear in mind when you start planning to buy a camcorder for yourself.

Digital Vs Analog: This is the easiest choice while picking a camcorder and the clear winner is the digital camcorder. Though the market still has plenty of analog camcorders and users still opt for these; the kind of picture quality, ease of operations and technological edge a digital camcorder can give you makes it a clear winner.

Camcorder Types: There are all kinds of camcorders in the market like MiniDV that makes use of a tape cassette and you can connect it to your TV and directly view the videos. Camcorders using DVDs have their own advantages which stem from the benefits like compactness and durability that DVDs ensure. Some camcorders in fact make use of in-built hard drives and are the easiest to operate and have immense storage capacity. There are some camcorders which use flash memory with decent storage whereas there are some that belong to the hybrid kind which use combos like DVD + hard drive and are great buys too.

Sensor: Though traditionally camcorders have been making use of CCD sensors (charge-coupled device), the latest innovation has been the CMOS sensors or the complementary metal-oxide semiconductor sensors. These not only help make the camcorders compact due to their smaller size but are also better in terms of low power usage and cheaper price.

LCD Viewers: The LCD screen is the standard viewer in all camcorders with the difference in various models lying in factors like aspect ratio, touch screen, screen size and flip out LCDs. Using LCD does give an edge in recording better videos but leads to faster use of the batteries as well.

Autofocus: It is a very helpful feature especially if you have just entered the world of video recordings. Even though most camcorders come fitted with the autofocus feature, in order to give some flexibility to the users aspects like shutter speed and exposure control, etc. are available for manual control as well.

Zoom: Zooming is a very crucial feature of the camcorders and having good optical zoom is an essential part of a good camcorder. Though any camcorder can be expected to have an optical zoom of 10x, what one should look for is close to 50x optical zoom so that better videos of even far of places can be captured better.

Others: There are many other features that define a good camcorder. The camcorder you pick is likely to have a USB port but moving with the times you must look out for mini-HDMI port also. Also, technologies like image stabilization, facility for image capture, etc. are also the features that make a great camcorder.
