Digital Camera vs. Camcorder

Home> Blogs> Camcorders> Digital Camera vs. Camcorder

Digital cameras and camcorders may be two different products having their own uniqueness but they do share some similarities too. They have some overlapping features which blur the difference between them and confuse the buyer, like the video recording ability, the basic feature of the camcorders and an added feature of the digital cameras. This poses a question as to which one of these gadgets should you invest your money in? The decision very much lies in comparing the two against their video recording abilities, the common thread that runs through both of them. You as the buyer would always have the freedom to pick the one you think will serve you better.

Video: The primary difference between a digital camera and a camcorder is in the quality of the videos recorded with the digital cameras leaving a lot to be desired. Though there are some brands that are offering 720p recording with digital cameras, it is still very far from the HD 1080p capabilities of the camcorders. As a matter of fact even the standard definition camcorders are good enough to score higher than the digital cameras.

Zoom: The zooming capabilities of camcorders are way more superior to the digital cameras. Moreover, most of the digital cameras won’t allow you to zoom while recording a video thus robbing you of the flexibility. With camcorders another great feature you can expect is the in-built lamp which helps in illumination and better scene recording. Eventually you can capture better videos with more freedom of choice with a camcorder than a digital camera.

Storage: When it comes to storage space it becomes a no contest between the digital camera and camcorder with the latter beating the former by miles. In fact it is not just the storage space which is a maximum of couple of GBs with a digital camera and goes up to hundreds of GBs with the camcorders, but it is also the various types of storage media like DVD, HDD, Flash Memory etc that give the camcorders a clear edge.

Audio: The audio recording ability and the quality achieved are essential features of any device which is used to record videos. Some not all of the digital cameras have the audio recording feature but is no match for the built-in microphone that camcorders boast of. As a matter of fact some brands offer camcorders which can record enhanced audio modes like multi channel and even surround sound.

Others: There are other features as well which make the choice easier for buyers. The camcorders are designed in a way that when you hold them it helps in recording videos for longer durations without much discomfort thus leading to better video capturing. Also most of the camcorders also allow you to take still images as well, but the overall results are not as good as you get with digital cameras.

When it comes to choosing the better option for video recording the obvious choice is the camcorder but in case of still photography the digital camera should be the preferred choice.
