Digital Camera Lens Types

Home> Blogs> Digital Cameras> Digital Camera Lens Types

The lens of a digital camera is considered to be the eye of the photographer. To see objects clearly and squarely the lens must be of high precision. Additionally, it should provide you the desired perspective and depth, the key characteristics of photography.

A camera lens also known as photography lens enables a camera to capture images. A camera lens may be a single optical lens or a compound lens that's built by assembling a bunch of lens elements together. A compound lens works better in minimizing optical aberrations and thereby helps in producing better image quality.

The photographic lenses can be made of glass, plastic, quartz glass, fluorite, and various other materials. While glass offers better optical properties and scratch resistance, plastic gives the design flexibility.

The two key characteristics of a camera lens are focal length that determines how large or small the image will be relative to the object, and the aperture that limits the image brightness and the shutter speed. You can capture the same object with different perspectives and depth by using lenses of different focal length and apertures.

The manufacturers of digital cameras recognize the needs of the photographers and offers a range of lenses that are suited for different types of photography. The trademark of a good lens is that it replicates the characteristics of the human eye, giving total control to the photographer behind it.

For normal casual photography, we go with the lens that the camera has. But for more professional shots, you could buy a camera that comes with a variety of lenses or at least allows you to change the lens type. Below, we discuss the types of various lenses.

Normal Zoom Lenses

These are the most commonly used photographic lenses. They are best for casual photography, family pictures, and holiday coverage. The normal lenses can cover wide-angle to medium telephoto views. If you are a casual photographer, this is all you need. Most general digital cameras have normal zoom lenses.

Telephoto Lenses

If you want to capture distant objects, you will require a telephoto lens. These lenses make the far distant objects look closer and bigger. Perfect for shooting animals in a wild sanctuary where you don’t want to risk getting close to the object. Ideal for capturing interesting moments of a sporting event where you would want to get close but aren’t allowed to.

Wide Angle Lenses

These lenses give you a wider view of the setting. Best suited for capturing landscapes and horizons. Additionally, the wide angle lenses give you the control to shoot in tight interiors where the subjects are too close.

Macro Lenses

If you want to get minutest details of your subjects, you would need a macro lens. These lenses make small things bigger. They are perfect for shooting flowers, vegetation, insects, water droplets, or stones at a beach.

Fish Eye Lenses

If the setting is small, narrow, and tight. You can utilize the fish eye lens that can capture 180 degree view.
