Buying a digital cameras can turn out to be a tricky business unless you know what you can expect from the market. There is a wide variety of camera options available and richness of choice and apparent overlapping of features may lead to some kind of confusion in the minds of the buyers. In spite of all this digital cameras can be broadly grouped into following categories;

Point And Shoot Camera

Most of the digital cameras that you find in the market are nothing but Point and Shoot cameras. In other words it is the most basic of digital cameras which has all the essential features required of a camera but doesn't allow for manual adjustments and other flexibilities.

Designed with keeping in mind the needs of an amateur photographer, these compact cameras usually have less pixel resolution and feature automatic handling capabilities. These are perfect for homes and families especially because of their lightweight, easy to use feature and lower prices. As far as their image quality is concerned, it surely is not an issue here.

Every camera manufacturer offers a wide range of point and shoot cameras for the users like Canon Powershot A200 IS, Sony Cybershot DSC-W7, Olympus Stylus 7010, Fuji FinePix F50 SE, Nikon Coolpix L11 and Kodak Easyshare M380.

Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera

Far more sophisticated than a simple camera, digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras are for the people who know their photography. As the name suggests these feature a reflex mirror and give the user the choice to opt for the lens be it telephoto or wide angle, whichever is the most suited for the occasion.

Digital SLRs are high-end cameras which every professional photographer yearns for. Instead of focusing on the automatic facilities these cameras have plenty of features which require manual operations by an experienced hand. These produce high-resolution images, have power flash, better image sensors, and are ideal for night photography.

The digital Single Lens Reflex cameras are obviously very advanced, complicated and for serious photographers, so their high prices are not really unexpected. But as users' interest is expanding and technology improving rapidly most of the manufacturers have started simplifying the user handling capabilities at least for the entry level digital SLRs.

Some of the very popular digital SLRs include Canon EOS 7D, Sony Alpha A100K, Nikon D300, FujiFilm FinePix S1500 and Olympus E30. With a digital SLR one usually needs to buy the interchangeable lenses separately.

Prosumer Digital Camera

A really interesting range of digital cameras, Prosumer digital cameras basically offer you the best of a simple digital camera and a digital SLR. These have the professional touch of a digital SLR but are available at affordable prices. These are favorite of users who are not very excited about the basic cameras and want more but don't want too much hassles of a digital SLR. The good thing is such options are available with most of the major camera manufacturers.
