Diwali festival brings an excitement that catches on months before the festival and lives for months after it. In Gujrat and Maharashtra, Navratras are celebrated with garava, a form of traditional Gujrati dance. You can find everyone dancing to the popular Bollywood or regional tunes in the community centers across the nation. Garva has become so popular that it’s organized not only in many parts of India today but also abroad. People also buy new TVs, cars, houses, household items, jewelry, and various other goodies during Navratras as they are considered auspicious for everything. Many also fast during Navratras for bodily cleansing. You can feel the spirituality in the air during this season throughout India.

Navratras conclude on tenth day with Dussehra (or Dushera) festival. Dussehra is also called as Vijaydashmi - dashmi means the tenth day and vijay means victory. It’s basically the 10th day of the Navratra and for many it signifies the victory of good over evil. It’s also believed that on Dussehra Lord Rama had killed the evil Ravana, the king of Lanka. People burn effigies of Ravana to celebrate this day. Conclusion of Dussehra sends out a strong message that Diwali, the festival of lights, is very near.

Diwali aka Deepavali follows exactly 20 days after Dussehra festival. Diwali is truly the God of festivals in India. It’s one festival that binds the whole nation. Indians, both home and abroad, celebrate Diwali with a lots of enthusiasm and religious fervor.

Whether one dwells in metros or in small villages, during Diwali season, life gets into a high gear. You can feel the energy bubbling out from every household. You find everyone, Kids and elders alike, completely soaked in festivity. People start cleaning and decorating their houses days before Diwali. Stores, nationwide, register a spike in sales during Diwali Sales, coupons, discount flyers can be seen all over the shopping malls. Such is the selling and shopping rush that everything appears to be on incredible sale. Candles, diyas/deepaks, crackers, and mithai make to everyone’s Diwali shopping list. There is no Diwali without lighting the Diwali diyas which invite light and prosperity into lives. Diwali transforms darkness into divine light.

Diwali prayers are an essential part of Diwali celebrations. Puja thalis are very popular for offering Diwali prayers. Since the festival has religious significance, people perform prayers and other rituals to appease their deities. Puja thali is a plate holding all the required items for offering prayers in a traditional way. At a minimum, the puja thali contains a diya. Puja thalis can be of brass, steel, or silver. Puja thali’s are also very relevant gift option for Diwali.

On Diwali day, people buy crackers and burst them in designated areas. It used to cause a lot of air pollution especially in densely populated cities like Delhi and Mumbai but nowadays authorities enforce strict rules to not let celebrations damage the environment. People are also aware of the dangers and take necessary precautions.

When it comes to buying gifts for Diwali, there is no dearth of options. Every year the available options multiply.
