If I ask you what is the future of personal computers what would you say? There was a time when we were introduced to these amazing machines that helped us in maintaining files and processed all our raw data and information. I still remember how amazed I was when I got my first computer.
Then came the portable era where we got to know how laptops work. Every student or professional was having a laptop with themselves while traveling or in a meeting. Still the love for computers was there. Some management colleges offered huge discounts on laptops or included the use of laptops in their syllabus and teaching methods.
But, till then everything was going fine with our computer world. Recently, when Apple launched its first iPad in 2010, the market got flooded with different kind of machines altogether. With iPad/tablets and smartphones, we started looking more on portability, size and easy-on-the-go style!
In a recent study by ComScore, it was found out that mobile devices were more popular than computers in US for accessing web. Some 6.8 percent of web traffic originated from non computer machines. Mobile phones were 4.4 percent of that traffic, while tablets made the 1.9 percent.
It is predicted that in the year 2015 PCs will die. What, seriously? That’s the first thought which comes to my mind, when I think how the world is changing. With the launch of Aakash tablet in India and RIM/Reliance tablets, people may choose these instead of computers. After all who needs a machine that takes up so much space on your work table, costs more and which isn’t portable as well?
PC sales have already started to decrease. We see everyone using mobile phones on the go for social networking or using their tablets for reading. The impact of smart phones and tablets on wireless computing is big and getting stronger each day. Coupled with internet and smartphones, even television sets let you surf the internet. We shouldn’t be surprised, if some day a computer manufacturer declares that, he will not make any more computers.
On the contrary, I think nothing can replace personal computers altogether. Can we imagine offices, college or school labs or may be internet cafes having tablets or smartphones? There is some growth in the PC market; however, that is due to Apple and Samsung’s products. Other products like Acer and Zenith have lost in this market.
I think, for large proportion of PC users, these machines would be hard to replace. But, for those who are looking for computing machines in less price, tablets and smartphones will always be a good buy.
