Dell Streak - An Android Tablet or Smartphone

Dell introduced Dell Streak as a Tablet, many call it a smartphone. The problem is what do you call a phone-like device with 5” screen? For a Smartphone Streak’s 5” screen is too big and bulky and for a Tablet it’s too small. You may choose to call it a mini Tablet or an oversized Smartphone as it really fits between the two.

Dell Streak

When Dell, that’s best known for its PC Desktops and PC Laptops, launched Streak back in May (2010) many wondered what Dell was up to. But when the likes of Apple and BlackBerry had the Smartphone market tight in their grip, it was best for Dell to position its device somewhere in the middle ground.

Dell Streak runs on Google Android operating system. Dell promises that Android 2.2 (Froyo) upgrade is on its way. It features a 1GHz processor that puts the device among the fastest available Smartphones and Tablets. Combining the features of a phone, entertainment device, GPS navigator, and an internet device, Dell Streak offers a lot to the consumers. But when you compare the device with Tablets such as Samsung Galaxy Tab or Olive Pad then 5 inch screen does fall short. These rival tablets also offer the mobile phone features but come with larger screens. When compared on speed, Dell Streak is at par with Galaxy Tab but wins over Olive Pad as the latter runs on slower 600MHz processor.

In memory, Dell Streak is behind rival tablets. It offers 512MB internal memory, expandable to 2GB. Most other tablets, and high end smartphones, offer up to 32GB expandable memory.

The tablet also features 5 megapixel camera with Dual LED Flash for photography and video capture, and a front facing VGA webcam. You can record home videos and create photo albums. The in-built social networking applications let you share your creations with your friends on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Olive Pad also comes with a camera however that’s 3 megapixel.

Being an Android tablet, Dell Streak gives you access to thousands of free applications. But Samsung Galaxy Tab and Olive Pad also run on Android so that’s not really a differentiator.

Basically, you can use the device for placing calls, surfing the web, watching videos, playing games, capturing still pictures or videos, or for messaging. Dell Streak will work great for buyers who want a compact Tablet – who find the idea of 7 inch or 10 inch screen far too stretched. Weighing just 220g, it’s obviously a lighter tablet to carry around. But you have to decide if you can use it as your primary mobile phone. For some it may be too bulky for a phone.

Dell want something to dominate the iPad, but I don't think this is going to be the killer device. Still looks slick, though.
