BlackBerry Vs Android Mobile Phones

Home> Blogs> Mobile Phones> BlackBerry Vs Android Mobile Phones

Until a couple of years ago, Blackberry ruled the roost when it came to smart phones. The entry of Google’s proprietary OS for mobile devices, the Android, took world by a storm. The impact of the introduction of Android phones in the market was so huge that everybody began talking about them. Software engineers began to spend their time and energy on writing cool Android apps and soon Android became the standard in the mobile OS market. Let’s discuss the key advantages and disadvantages of both. (See BlackBerry Deal on TolMol)

For this, first let’s dive deep into the functionality of a phone powered by an Android OS. The Android operating system is a multi-user Linux system in which each application is a different user. The system assigns each application a unique Linux user ID. Each process has its own virtual machine (VM), so an application's code runs in isolation from other applications. The Android system implements the principle of least privilege. That is, each application, by default, has access only to the components that it requires to do its work and no more. This creates a very secure environment in which an application cannot access parts of the system for which it is not given permission. Multitasking is implemented by Intent and Intent filters. The real power of a phone powered by an Android OS comes from these features.

Blackberries have slower processors than competing Android phones. This is apparent when installing apps, multitasking or doing processor intensive tasks. However, Blackberry OS is a bit easier to use than the Android one because of the simple user-interface. When it comes to browsers, Android wins hands down. It supports numerous third party browsers like Dolphin HD, Skyfire, Opera Mini among others. Blackberry supports BOLT! and Opera Mini. When it comes to playing media, both perform fairly well. The Android beats the competition easily when it comes to apps and third party software. Google has programmed some amazing apps like Visual Search, Maps with Navigation, Sky Map, etc. Replacement keyboards, SMS clients, games, browsers, media players, etc. are either cheap or free in the Android world.

Another disadvantage of a Blackberry is the loud click which is heard each time a snap is taken with the camera. You would have to cancel taking a snap of your cute kids if they are sleeping. Blackberry erases text messages occasionally to clear memory, thus making it unsuitable for people who text a lot. Further, the Blackberry Curve and Blackberry Bold handsets are a bit bulky.

However, all is not lost for Blackberry. It is easily the best when it comes to push email. It has a patented technology that makes one’s emails available as soon as they are sent. Real time email is a breeze on a Blackberry. On the other hand, Android uses SMS messages or IM apps for real time communication. Blackberry, too has a proprietary IM system which is pretty good.

When it comes to security, Blackberry scores better. Even the NSA (National Security Agency, USA) uses Blackberry platform for information exchange. Also, there have been a few concerns about the privacy of user’s data with Google. Further, since Google Android is an open source platform driving all Android phones, it could significantly increase the risk of hacking these devices. Also, some carriers who charge a fee for some of the web based applications may reject Google Android which enables access to these apps free of charge.
