Cell phone makers are invading the domain of camera companies by packing ever sophisticated cameras into the mobile handsets. This has left the camera manufacturers in a tizzy to train their guns in defense. They are offering more innovative, technogically superior, feature and style laiden digital cameras. Many like Fujifilm are even breaking new grounds in the digital photography for the mobile mania is no trival threat. Fujifilm has hurled its bombshell, the new 3D digital camera that adds a whole new dimension to photography.

As the bollywood superstar Sharukh Khan suggests in a Dish TV commercial -- "Don't be santusht, wish karo, dish karo (Don't be satisfied, make a wish, have a dish)" -- Fujifilm asserts that don't stop at 2D, explore the brilliant new side of 3D.

If you have ever watched a 3D film, you know that it's one thrilling experience. Bringing the same magic into a compact digital camera is an amazing feat. Fujifilm's REAL 3D W1 Digital Camera holds the promise to revolutionize digital photography but are we really ready to make a switch? Or we are santusht (satisfied) with the numerous 2D options we have?

Both the compact digital cameras as well as the digital SLRs have been getting slimmer, smarter, and cheaper. The rugged camera models are in. The style quotient is running high. The choice of lenses and other optical accessories is on a swell. Some of us (especially in India) haven't even made the transition from film to digital cameras and now we have to deal with another beast - the 3D digital camera.

While 3D offers an unique and exciting experience, the technology will pose a few challenges till it becomes universal. For example, you cannot watch your 3D photos or videos on your existing TV or computer screens as they are not 3D ready yet. The 2.7 inch screen of the camera is large enough for the preview but if you want to showcase captured images to your family and friends you will have to use the larger 3D picture viewer. Fujifilm is smart, and kind, enough to ship this 3D viewer along with the camera but this larger screen may be difficult to travel around with.

Printing these 3D pictures could be another dampner. You'll have to buy a special photo paper which will most likely cost you more than the standard photo paper. Initially, the photo paper may not be easily available either.

The quest for that perfect digital camera must go on but for enjoying the real value of 3D some may prefer waiting for more compatible devices. For example - Internet lovers may like to wait for the day they can share these picture with their online friends. Mobile fans may prefer waiting for a 3D viewer in the mobile phones. Talking of mobile, wonder how long the mobile makers will take to support 3D camera in the mobile phone itself.
