Amazon Kindle DX goes Global but without colors
If you felt jealous of American consumers who could boast about their newly acquired digital book readers, you now have an option too. Amazon's latest Kindle e-book reader model Kindle DX is available to buyers across 100 countries including India and Australia. But will you really buy it? Kindle DX flaunts a large 9.7" display - the biggest screen among available digital book readers. Kindle DX also introduces global wireless. A 3G wireless service that covers over 100 countries. But the device carries a rediculous price tag. By paying $489.00 + taxes, you are getting a book reader that can trot the globe with you.
Amazon claims that you can download a new book in less than a minute in any of these 100 countries. That is cool but what's not cool is this - you have to pay the dollar price even if you are buying the Kindle DX in some other country. This is because Amazon is shipping the device from US to various other countries. Buyers, regardless of where they are buying from, have to pay in US Dollars. There is another headache for non-US buyers. Amazon will ship Kindle DX with US power-adapter that supports voltage between 100-240V. This power adapter won't work without an added voltage converter, in countries like India. You'll have to buy a converter (read more expense) to use Kindle DX in India. While traveling locally, you'll have to remember to always carry this additional piece of electronics for uninterrupted connectivity. Additionally, all non-US buyers will have to pay the custom duties as per their country's law. For an Indian buyer, Kindle DX will cost somewhere around Rs. 50,000 which many would prefer spending on a high end notebook. Another disappointing factor of Amazon Kindle DX is that it's still all grey. Doesn't have the colors and the vibrance of Barnes & Noble's Nook. The cost could have been justified if Amazon had added a color display. The 9.7" display of Amazon Kindle DX will surely appeal to many. In this model, Amazon has made Kindle come close to a real magazine in size and feel. And this little device can hold up to 3500 books or periodicals and download new books in seconds while on the go. The text to speech feature of Kindle DX is another bonus - it can read a newspaper, book, periodical, or other digital documents. Finally, one thing you must note is there are no monthly charges for Kindle DX Wireless service. Considering that Kindle DX is not a bad buy.
