What Apple does only Apple can. And the same is true for the touchscreen tablet market. Apple’s iPad rules like a king of users’ hearts and others like Archos 9 struggle to survive. It is not that Archos 9 PC Tablet is a bad product. It especially the upgraded version, actually impresses you with some of the features. But considering it is up against the giant iPad, it does struggle against the latest sensation from Apple. In spite of its weaknesses Archos 9 is still a PC Tablet worth exploring and performs well enough to stand on its own.

Archos 9 was initially launched with 1.1GHz Intel Atom Z510 processor, which had all the power that any netbook could offer at that time. But it was launched under the shadows of the possible upcoming launch of iPad and an upgrade was always on the cards. Hence, in due course of time an upgraded version of Archos 9 with Intel Atom Z515 processor was launched in the market. In addition to adding more power to perform, it also supports additional capabilities including hyperthreading.

The Archos 9 PC Tablet’s one big strength is its 8.9” touchscreen with LED-backlit display. The size and colors of the screen impress but in terms of its usability the screen leaves a lot to be desired. It is not as responsive as a touchscreen should be and even after the upgrade the problem has not been taken care of completely. The good thing is with its screen size you can very much enjoy watching movies and videos on it. In fact it plays HD video in 1080p to make it among the very best in its category.

The 10.1x5.4x0.7 inch tablet weighing only 1.8 lbs runs on the Windows 7 Starter Edition. In addition to the Atom processor it also has Intel US15W chipset and dynamic video memory technology based Intel GMA 500 graphics processor. Moreover, to help run various applications it has been loaded with 1GB DDR2 SDRAM memory and 60GB of hard drive storage space. Initially when Archos 9 was launched this configuration was more or less what was being offered in the segment but now a lot needs to be upgraded to make it a desirable gadget among the users.

Archos 9 offers you a QWERTY virtual keyboard so that you can work on your documents including create and edit these. It has integrated Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and high speed USB as connectivity options. It also comes with a 1.3MP webcam which helps you in video conferencing. It performs decently well in case you want to listen to music considering it has in-built stereo speaker and also has Realtek ALC269 audio codec.

Archos also comes with various software and applications including Skype, vTuner, Windows Live, Lotus Symphony and Microsoft Security Essentials. It is powered by Lithium polymer based battery which has a running life of about 5hr but only when Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are not in use and you are using only mini backlight.

As a whole Archos 9 is a combination of some good features and some not so good features especially the usability part. And when it comes to the competition in the market where iPad also exists, it is too far away from the best options that users would like to spend their money on.
