BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Lands in India

BlackBerry PlayBook tablet that was launched in US on April 19 has finally made to India. You can pre-order your PlayBook before June 22 on BlackBerry India website. The company also promises freebies like HDMI cable and tablet case to early registrants so hurry up if you are planning to buy one.

BlackBerry PlayBook is the very first tablet from Research in Motion (RIM), the Ontario Canada based company that’s best known for its BlackBerry smartphones. The company competes with Apple in the smartphone space. The RIM BlackBerry and Apple iPhone have been the dominating smartphones fighting a close battle until the Google Android based handsets flooded the market. But still these are the top notch smartphones with superior voice quality, design, features, security, and other unparalleled features.

The BlackBerry and iPhone are by far the biggest and most popular brands in smartphones, each with its own strengths. By venturing into PC tablet field, RIM has declared another war with Apple whose iPad tablet has already built a sound fan following. Their phone rivalry ensured fast evolution of smartphone technologies so we can expect the same in tablets. (Buy BlackBerry 8830 for just Rs. 4,699)

Since its launch in April, BlackBerry PlayBook has received mixed reviews. Many critics believe that the tablet was rushed to market. But no one denies that it scores over Apple iPad in browsing and video playback features. Apple iPad doesn’t support Flash based websites whereas like Android tablets PlayBook comes with Flash support. And the RIM tablet also boasts about its security features something that was a strong point of BlackBerry smartphones as well – you simply don’t get that level of security in any other mobile or tablet. Another highlight of PlayBook is its Facebook app. For social networking fans, this is a great application to have in the tablet. It’s not available for iPhone users yet.

One of shortcomings of PlayBook is its dependency on BlackBerry smartphone for doing basic things such as Email, Instant Messaging, and Calendar. The tablet comes with a BlackBerry Bridge application that connects the device to BlackBerry phone to enable these communication features. The dependency however will soon be removed, as per RIM, by including these apps in the tablet itself.

The hardware configuration of PlayBook tablet is quite impressive. It sports 7 inch display. Runs on dual core 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM ensuring blazing performance. For fun and video conferencing, the tablet also comes with two High Definition (HD) cameras – 5 megapixel camera on the front side and a 3 megapixel camera on the rear.

The PlayBook, like iPad, is available in many variants depending upon storage capacity. You can buy a 16GB, 32 GB, or 64GB model variant depending upon your needs. The company also plans to offer 4G Long Term Evolution variant as well.

The big question is how much does this tablet cost in India. And the short answer is we do not know yet. In US market, the device carries a price tag of $499, so the speculation is that in India it will be priced somewhere around Rs. 3000. That will also be comparable to rival iPad's price.

Since BlackBerry PlayBook is making a late entry, it will have to fight other rivals off and that list, having names like Samsung, Motorola, Dell, and HP, is not small. RIM might have hurried the launch of its first version but the company will surely focus more on features and quality of the device in their newer avatars.
