Libraries and local book stores have been popular destinations for students, scholars, and bibliophiles. They offer a unique atmosphere – the company of great books, the knowledge within, and the great authors behind them. You get that special feeling the moment you walk into a book store, or a library.

Having a library, a room filled with all kinds of books and comfortable place to sit down and read, at home is a luxury that many still dream of. If you are into books, you make plans how your library will one day look like. You acquire rare books and feel proud to showcase them. You can pick them up from the shelf at any time to satisfy your quench for infotainment.

But soon the idea of having physical books and elegant shelves showcasing them could become a history. We are living in times dominated by digital and mobile technologies. With digitization newspapers, books, and magazines are finding new homes, new shelves, and new desks. Similarly, the book readers cannot but enjoy the new ways of accessing and reading books.

Our habits and the tools and technologies we depend upon are fast changing. We are spending an increasing amount of time in front of electronic screens – be it of Computer Laptop, PC Tablet, Mobile Phone, or an iPod. All these devices are portable and at least our mobile phone is always with us no matter where we go. The availability of wi-fi has made internet accessible anytime, anywhere. The result – newspapers, books, and magazines are fast shifting their bases from shelves to screens.

If the traditional screens were somewhat limiting and less attractive for book reading, we now have dedicated eBook readers in Amazon Kindle2, Sony Daily Edition, and Barnes & Noble Nook. While they attempt to simulate the experience of reading a physical book, they also offer features that we never imagined possible. An eBook reader, for example, allows you to pack thousands of books into its tiny belly. The recently launched Nook and Amazon Kindle can embody up to 1500 books in their standard memory – you can store many more if you expand the memory.

These eBook readers are slimmer and lighter than even a book – imagine traveling with a load of books versus almost a blade thin eReader loaded with digital books. They give you access to online book stores. You can browse through various titles – Nook even allows you to view excerpts of the book right on the device. If you like something you can order and download it in seconds – Yes, it’s delivered not at door but directly into your digital book reader.

Want more? The eBook reader can even read the book out to you. If you don’t like holding an electronic gadget just plug your headphones in and listen as the book reads itself. These readers come with long battery life so that you can enjoy reading for many hours without having to recharge. You can even sync your digital readers with computers and mobile phones.

So far we have seen digital book readers from only a handful of companies. The rumors are that both Microsoft and Apple are coming out with their e-Readers. It would be exciting for consumers to see more options on the table. I would not be surprised to see eReaders from Google and Dell next.

The shelves to screen drive is for real!
