Digital Cameras Turning into DSLRs
Digital Cameras are facing a fierce competition from Mobile Phone cameras. Consumers see no reason to buy an exclusive Digital Camera if their mobile phone already offers a good quality in-built camera, and rightly so. Why would one like to splurge on a second camera? Also why move around with an added device when a single converged handheld meets the need? Digital Camera brands have to give consumers some solid ground to consider buying their cameras. Professional photographers would not settle for anything lesser than a DLSR so that’s not an area of concern for the camera makers. It’s the casual photographers who have the phone camera option. And for camera manufacturers, casual photographers’ market is too large and lucrative to ignore. The challenge is how do you make your Digital Cameras distinct from mobile cameras and still keep the usage simple and the price low. What we are witnessing is a trend to pack the Digital SLR capabilities into standard Digital Cameras. Most camera brands are offering new band of cameras that offer things like interchangeable lenses, removable flash, and larger CMOS sensors among other things. A Digital Camera, as we knew it, is graduating from being a casual photography tool to a professional photography device while retaining its ease of use and the price range. It’s the affordability and ease of use that popularized digital cameras. No matter what additional features you stuff in a camera, you cannot risk compromising its basic aura. You might wonder what will happen to Digital SLR’s if their features start moving to Digital Cameras. Well, simply put, they will also get better and will offer newer advanced features never imagined before. It’s not that they will sit and wait for cameras to chew their existence out. They will get more sophisticated features of their own to keep a safe distance from Digital Cameras. In other words, as digicams avoid getting cannibalized by phone cameras, DLSRs will invoke new frontiers to avoid getting cannibalized by digicams. Top camera brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Samsung have already launched their digital cameras with limited Digital SLR’s capabilities. Sony accomplished the feat with the launch of Sony NEX cameras. Sony NEX3 and Sony NEX5 are 14.2 megapixel cameras that offer 720fps continuous shot, and HD video recording capability. The cameras weigh almost half of what a typical DSLR weighs and cost about half the price. Sony NEX 5 is priced at Rs. 34,990/ while Sony NEX 3 is priced at Rs. 29,999/-. These cameras are designed to work with Sony DLSR accessories. Samsung NX series cameras are 14.6 megapixel and offer large CMOS sensor, removable flash, and 3 interchangeable lenses. Samsung NX 10 comes in two models – one with 30 mm lens is priced at Rs. 44,990/ and other with 18mm lens at Rs. 42,990/. Digital Cameras had already forayed into the realm of internet connectivity and social features. With Digital SLR capabilities, they have gained all the more power. In the direction that they are headed, they are bound to become simpler, cheaper, and lighter alternatives to Digital SLRs. More Digital Cameras |
