How Important is Boot-Time for Tablets
Tablets are fast gaining ground and giving stiff competition to laptops.Although they are less powerful than laptops, still they are in a position togive stiff competition to laptops because the priority of majority of laptopusers is content consumption. Content creation part is light for most ofthe users. According to a study, less than 20% of laptop users indulge inintensive content creation activities and these users are basically softwareengineers, graphics designers, etc. (Buy Tablets in India, Tablet Prices in India) In today’s world, the bulk of the users just need MS Office, Adobe AcrobatReader and an Internet connection and few multimedia playing softwarefor entertainment. These can be easily provided with tablets and work justfine. So, essentially a tablet can satisfy the demands of most consumers. Atablet is cheaper, lighter and more chic when pitted against a laptop. It alsohas a longer battery life. The lighter weight and the longer battery life aretwo features which go heavily in favor of tablets. No sensible person wouldlike to carry a laptop which needs to be charged every 3 hours when his/hercomputing needs can be fully addressed to by a tablet whose battery canlast up to 8 hours. That said, the most frustrating period of time we spend with our tablets isthe boot-up time. People, ideally, want the gadget to be up in a negligibleamount of time. The basic fundamental is that as soon as you press the ‘On’button, the tablet should be up and running in a matter of seconds. If it’snot, then you suck as a brand (the tablet manufacturer). This is because youwill quickly lose market share to your competitor who happens to have ashorter boot-up time for the tablet manufactured by his company. In the speed crazy world, consumers want every damn thing to be fasterthan ever before. If you can satiate the appetite of consumers regardingspeed, your bank account would swell, otherwise you surely are doomedto hell! (Wow! that rhymed.) Boot-up time assumes critical importance inmany scenarios. Let’s suppose someone is reading a novel in PDF format. He goes for a coffee, then comes back and fires on his tablet. If the novel isinteresting, he can’t probably wait half a minute for his tablet to boot-up. The ideal boot-up time for the tablet should be anything close to 5 secondsor less than that. Anything above 5 seconds is just unacceptable because itworsens the consumer experience. After all, our machines should make our lives more beautiful and not make us wait!
