How to break a laptop

Buying a new computer, be it a laptop or a fancier netbook, can be extremely gratifying. First time computer buyers cannot take their eyes off of a colorful screen laden with inviting icons. The thrill of being able to command a machine explodes all over them. Those who have tried their hands on a computer before find the spanking new model deeply refreshing. The spotless appearance of the new laptop, or any other product for that matter, can give goosebumps to anyone. However, all the excitement of having a new computer can die in seconds for there are hundreds of easy ways to end up with a broken laptop or netbook.

1. Drop from 10 feet height

Want to see your laptop in pieces, just let it fall free from a height of about 10 feet straight down to a hard floor. Damage from a small height may still be repairable but 10 feet will get its juices out in open. I hate to be so rude but it would be a miracle of the 21st century if a laptop survives with only minor injuries after crashing from 10 ft height. Therefore this is one sure shot way for breaking a laptop.

If the screen lock of the laptop is not strong enough, you are likely to see the screen flying away from its base. The keyboard will also spring out, exposing the interior (the motherboard, processor, and memory) for injuries. You'll be lucky if some component didn't hit your nose back while on its way to liberation.

Want to avoid this?

  1. Always keep your laptop safely tucked in a laptop case with nice foam pads around it to absorb the impact
  2. Don't try to experiment unless the manufacturer has promised you a free replacement
  3. While buying a laptop always check how well the screen locks down with the base

2. Hand over the laptop to a 3 years old

Got a kid with scientific mind? Just handover your laptop to him (boys are best at it!) and watch it being reverse engineered in a matter of seconds. Don't forget to leave the kid alone with the machine - they work wonders when not disturbed. In few minutes, trust me, you'll find the kid sitting on a pile of keys working his way deep inside. You won't find anything distorted but then you won't find much interconnected parts either. If he's gotten his hands on the mouse, damage could be more. He could kill or launch certain programs via random clicking which can easily choke a laptop.

As long as the kid doesn't hammer too hard, the damage is usually repairable.

Want to avoid this?

  1. Never leave your laptop unattended in the company of kids
  2. Password protect your laptop and never leave it unlocked

3. Throw water, tea, or coffee

Spilling some liquid over an open laptop is another guaranteed method of spoiling it for good. Just take a cup full of your favorite beverage (even plain water will do), drain it on the laptop, and let it penetrate and settle well. The latop will enjoy being soaked so much that it will refuse to turn on.

If you see fumes bubbling out, you have smoked your laptop. If you have got shining stars over you, the accident may spoil only some parts that are replaceable. But if motherboard is gone, you have had it - replacing it will cost almost same as buying a new laptop.

Want to avoid this?

  1. It's very tempting to keep your cofee cup at your working desk but keep it at a safe distance from laptop
  2. If the accident happens ever, react fast. Turn off the power and tilt the laptop to let the liquid drain out instead of allowing it to drain in.

4. Leave it on and uncharged for long enough

This is probably easiest of all. Just leave your laptop on and remove its power adapter or turn it off. The battery will drain in a few hours. If the laptop is new and from a good brand, it will go in sleep automatically and the laptop will stay in healthy state. But even with good brands if you repeat this 4-5 times you'll start seeing serious symptoms viz. sudden blue screen, dead battery, abrupt automatic shutdown, and failed start up.

This basically sets the laptop on a quick path to dying and before you realize it it will become irrepairable.

Want to avoid this?

  1. Always keep your laptop charged optimally. Never let it go below 1-2% charge.
  2. Don't try to turn on a laptop purely on battery if you know the battery is discharged almost completely
  3. Report the symptoms to the manufacturer as soon as you can if the laptop is under warrantee. If not in warrantee, take it to your tech support (if it's a business laptop) or to a local repair shop (if it's personal)
