Is Apple iPad a Netbook Killer? Who will Win the Battle?
After Apple announced the launch of Apple iPad, the industry analysts are actively debating whether iPad directly competes with netbooks? Netbook is the fastest growing segment of the computer industry. Netbooks are lighter version of laptops that are primarily used for net surfing, gaming, watching videos, and communicating (email and chat). They are ultra portable. Offer longer battery life compared to their big brothers. And, they are a lot cheaper than a traditional laptop. Netbook is usually priced between $350 to $600. Dell and HP are two leaders in this segment but there are many other players now rapidly entering this lucrative and hot space. In addition to Dell and HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Sony, and Samsung are some of the popular netbook brands. They all have something unique to offer - price, design, compactness, performance, and energy efficiency are the key factors that consumers look for while making a netbook buying decisions. Another domain that netbooks have ventured into is the cover customizations. Netbooks brought the design studio into consumers hands. Most brands allows consumers to choose their netbook cover design to truly personalize their netbook. So why will someone buy an iPad instead of a netbook? The pricing of the Apple iPad is right in the range of netbooks and it offers all the features that a netbook comes with. What differntiates iPad is its look and feel that only Apple can offer. It is said that those who are already fans of Apple products including the iPhone and Mac are most likely the early adopters of iPad, especially if they are looking for a netbook or a product to replace iPhone. There are many iPhone users who are highly likely to switch over to the iPad because of the plain economics, as the usage cost of a 3G enabled iPad is substantially lower than that of an iPhone. Except for the camera, the iPad has everything and more that iPhone users will demand. One thing that can make consumers tilt towards Netbook is its screen size. Standard netbooks start from 10" display whereas Apple iPad offers only 9" display. The iPad also doesn't have a physical keyboard like Netbook. What about iPad's ruggedness? Will it stand a free fall from up to 5-6 ft? We guess it is too early to predict anything but history hints that iPad is a real threat to many netbook brands.
