Latest Vs. Time Tested Gadgets - A Comparison
The question of selecting latest or time tested gadget always baffles consumers. Usually, the latest gadget in the market is loaded with some new features which are publicized to an extent that its counterpart, the time-tested one, pales when compared to its latest avatar. Basically, it is analogous to choosing a fixed deposit scheme or the share market when it comes to investing your money. A newly launched gadget, if it’s perfect in quite a few aspects, gains the label of time-tested within a few years. But, generally the novelty of a recently launched gadget wears off in some amount of time when the pre-launch hype gradually subsides and actual consumer reviews start pouring on social networking sites, blogs and sites that analyze and rate gadgets. Hasty decisions are regretted during this period as the hard-earned money is spent on a gadget that fails to live up to the expectations of the buyers. Latest vs. time-tested is basically the difference between what you expect and what you already know. Expectations aren’t fulfilled always, you know. When you go for a time-tested gadget, you already know what to expect and what the others have to say about their experience with the gadget. Therefore, you are at ease. You are less anxious and a little bit less excited. It’s the reverse for a new gadget. There you just hope that everything turns out as promised before the big launch. Almost all companies these days follow the principle of simultaneous promotion. The basic idea is as follows: Create a bit of excitement about the gadget which the company is about to launch by giving some info about what the company is planning in the interviews scheduled with newspapers of the key men and women of the company. Once they say something, the news-hungry media does the rest. Further, the excitement factor is escalated before the big launch. Newspapers, prime-time television slots are filled with the advertisement of the upcoming gadget and the basic aim is to etch a memory of the gadget into the minds of the people so that whenever they feel that they need that type of a gadget, the product of the particular company should flash in their mind. I won’t go into finer details of marketing here. But, this is basically what is done universally. Further, another important aim of advertisements is to create a sense of need for the gadget when there did not exist any previously. All this is extremely positive when the gadget launched fulfills the expectations and changes the lives of consumers in a meaningful way (for example, the i-Pad by Apple). But, more often than not, gadgets fail to deliver on all the promised fronts and consumers feel cheated and robbed of their money. However, this is not a problem with time-tested gadgets. The consumers have already put their seal of appreciation on the time-tested gadget and you may buy one without a care in the world. Still, one has to take a chance sometimes when the newly launched gadget is the first of its kind. So folks, it’s a trade off. You have to take chances sometimes in order to find something beautiful which didn’t existed before. Author: Jatin Agrawal More on Gadgets |
