Netbooks - Just Why?Fine, the idea of a laptop has aged. The new era belongs to netbooks, their slimmer, sleeker, and cheaper descendants. The world seems to be going gaga over netbooks. Do these blade-thin, power-deficient, memory-deficient, DVD-drive-less portable computers deserve so much attention? Heck, I guess, they do. Well, think of it. Nokia the mobile maker, of all the companies, has started making netbooks. The company will have something to fall back upon in case it loses its smartphone fight but that's another topic. Needless to mention that all computer makers are in high gear to churn out newer netbook models. The war zone is expanding every month. Who can offer the longest battery life? Who can offer better speed? Don't know with one Intel how much scope is there really but speed improvement can help netbooks shine even brighter. And of course, the weight. The lightest netbook maker will be heaviest on its competitors. The advent of netbooks is a boon for companies like Google. People who could not afford a laptop can today think of buying a netbook that costs them much lesser. And a netbook with affordable data plans gives them internet access. More people having internet access means more people clicking Google ads which translates to more money for Google. Google is just an envious example, it's true for any internet business. I won't be surprised if at some point in future, netbooks are offered for free with data-plan contracts. Remember OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) drive? Though the OLPC had the blessings of many big guns, like Intel, Microsoft and Dell, it suffered setbacks due to the recession. But still the evolution of netbooks can be credited to OLPC. If not a $100 laptop, anyone today can buy a $299 netbook. And, that's not a small accomplishment. A netbook has the potential to reach many more people in the world than an expensive laptop possibly can. It holds the power to connect the world in ways we never imagined - collaboration, information exchange, and trade are just some of the possibilities. Even an ordinary netbook can have an exraordinary positive impact on individuals who have so far not been touched by the internet and digital wave. The arrival of netbooks can only deserve a big warm welcome - both from the industry and consumers.
