Nokia Smartphones Not Smart Enough?

Home> Blogs> Tech TolMol> Nokia Smartphones Not Smart Enough?

If Google is the God of Search and Microsoft the Messiah of Operating System and Office - Nokia is the undisputed Mogul of Mobiles. But the irony is that inspite of being the biggest mobile phone maker in the world, Nokia has so far failed to shake up the smartphones scales in its favor. The Finnish company has been losing the smartphone battle to the likes of Apple and Research in Motion.

The smartphones are becoming more popular with every sunrise. More and more consumers are preferring handsets that can be used for web surfing, email, and for running various other useful software applications along with the standard voice communication. The growing demand for such smart mobile devices offers an attractive business opportunity. But Nokia's challenge is that iconic iPhone from Apple and the BlackBerry phones from RIM (Research in Motion) have been gaining more ground. Not just that, the new Google Android phones from mobile makers like HTC have also been generating enough interest to put Nokia on the defensive.

Nokia, who has been enjoying the number one mobile seller position for over a decade, obviously won't watch this gradual but consistent erosion of its smartphone market share with its hands folded. The company has been trying every bit to reverse the trend in its favor. It launched Nokia N97, the smartphone with a slideout keyboard, amid media blitz. Spent millions in advertising it heavily. When it realized that the only way to challenge Apple's rise is to have its own app store, the company also re-launched Nokia Ovi Store.

Nokia's efforts have paid off but not significantly enough yet. The reality is that Nokia's Ovi Store still has only about 3,500 applications compared to Apple's 65,000 apps in the popular App Store. The value of Nokia's shares have fallen by 18% while those of Apple and RIM have witnessed an 80% rise.

There are many things that make Apple iPhone so hot among buyers. It's exremely simple to use, offers the much appreciated speed, has a wow factor to its design, and above all it gives consumers tons of options in terms of mobile applications. Yes, iPhone is expensive and many mobile makers, probably including Nokia, thought that that alone is enough to keep masses away from Apple but to Apple's delight people are ready to shell out a couple of hundred dollars to get the value iPhone offers. Also, HTC is better positioned to offer the low-end smartphones. And that leaves Nokia with little ammunition to counter the smart attack.

The buzz is that Nokia may step out of Symbian only phones. The company has so-far denied the rumors that it's building an Android phone but you never know. It may be pushed to make some hard choices in coming months in order to retain its Mogule of Mobiles status.

Note than Apple sells just one phone that is iPhone. Nokia sells hundreds of different models. Apple focuses its energies to build, enhance, and push just one phone, Nokia's resources get distributed among Nokia N97, Nokia 6700, Nokia MusicExpress, blah.. blah..

Quite frankly Nokia smartphones don't look and feel stunning like BlackBerry or iPhone. In my opinion, Nokia stands no chance in winning the smartphone war..
