We don’t know if tablets will be the laptops of tomorrow but 2011 certainly belongs to these mobile devices with large screen and no physical keyboard. Apple iPad set the trend rolling by captivating consumers by its smooth svelte looks and what followed was a deluge of tablets mostly powered by Google Android operating system. Samsung, Motorola, BlackBerry, HP, Dell, HTC all joined the party by introducing their versions of the tablet. And all managed to generate interest in their models by offering something that the rival version did not have. While tablets are evolving rapidly and selling well, it’s unclear if they will dethrone laptops or become yet another device that the consumers will consider a necessity.

There are multiple factors that are driving the popularity of tablets.
The chips are getting smaller whereas their power is multiplying. They can fit in slim devices, consume lesser power yet deliver high performance. It’s these breakthroughs in the processing technologies that have enabled tablet makers to offer unprecedented processing speed. Tablets are not behind in their power from standard laptops. 1GHz processor is almost a norm now and many newer tablet models are offering 2GHz dual core processors. Tablets can therefore easily perform all the functions of a laptop.
Tablet screen size ranges from 7 inch to 10.5 inch. Currently Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom, anf BlackBerry Playbook are the front runners in the tablet market. iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom beat others in the display size offering over 10 inch screen space.
Tablets are designed for content consumption and therefore a screen size of around 10 inch is ideal for them. They are light like books and magazines so can be carried around just like them. You won’t feel their weight. Apple iPad 2 is the lightest tablet weighing just 1.3 pounds. The flimsy tablets can be held on palms without straining the wrists – that’s how light they are.
Tablets power at the press of a button unlike laptops that can take minutes to boot up. The operating systems that power tablets are designed for loading up instantly when the power button is pressed. And they can run on batteries for over 10 hrs.
The only big drawback of tablets is the lack of physical keyboard but then the manufacturers have an answer to that in an external accessory set that includes a keyboard and a mouse for the tablet. With these accessories one can use the tablet as a laptop while at a desk, and let it return to its natural self while on the go.
Tablets have gotten the attention of the world so they are here to say. They may not replace laptops but then people will love having them as an add-on option among their electronic gadgets.
