The Mobile Phone BugDr. Martin Cooper invented the mobile phone way back in 1973 but this technology took India by storm only recently. If we look 5-6 years back we were still praying hard to get landline telephone connections. Like any other government controlled seva (service), telephone connections were not easy to come by. You first had to visit a local government office to apply for the connection and then forget about it for a few years. If you were lucky, you would get the connection in 3-4 years otherwise you had to re-apply or warm some babu's palms. Then mobile bug came and bit us all, including babu's who denied us a landline connection. For most of us, it was a straight promotion to the wireless mobile communication. And, we instantly fell in love with it.
The mobile phones gave us the flexibility of controlling our expense on minute by minute, call by call basis. We control when to recharge and for how much. Another thing that mobile phone gave us is SMS, the short messaging system. SMS became our primary language of communication the moment we got introduced to it. Today, we prefer SMS over voice-calls. In a country of over billion people where EMail is a luxury of only a few million people with internet access, SMS has a mass reach. It connects youth of our nation like no other medium did before. The mobile phone market in India is still expanding. There are still many Indians who haven't got their first handset yet. The mobile makers from around the world are rushing to India with their brands. Those already present are heading towards the rural India to ensure no one is left behind in this mobile race. The result is today we have a plethora of choices to choose from. What started as a communication tool has evolved into a all-in-one electronic device offering a multitude of features. Talking, SMS/MMS, phone books, speaker phone, FM Radio, and MP3 Players are now basic features of a mobile phone. Mid to high end models also include digital camera, gaming features, video recording, emailing, web browsing capability, and more recently the GPS navigation systems. The mobile phone has transformed into a smart phone that is more than a communication utility. It's now a fashion statement of young India. The top mobile phone brands in India include: |
