Is PlayBook RIM’s answer to Apple’s iPad? At a high level it appears so. After the announcement of the introduction of PlayBook, RIM is now officially in the tablet business and ready to capitalize on rapidly growing interest in the slates. Among many other cool features, RIM PlayBook comes with the 7-inch display, Wi-Fi connectivity and a dual-core processor. The PlayBook is not in the market yet but is expected to be available by first quarter of 2011.

Is RIM PlayBook a real threat to Apple iPad? Or does RIM plan to define its own market segment? Let’s discuss further. One major difference between iPad and PlayBook is the feature set with two different segments in mind. iPad appeals to the needs of the individuals (music, games, web, etc.) whereas PlayBook is going to play in the business domain (email, etc.) of the enterprise. As we know that RIM BlackBerry Enterprise Server is very popular among the business users so PlayBook will surely have advantage over iPad when serving businesses. BlackBerry is a favourite tool of business leaders. iPad on the other hand is known for music, games and other applications that are popular among the non-business users.

One big disadvantage of PlayBook is the operating system it runs on. The PlayBook runs on QNX and not on BlackBerry OS and therefore not in a position to take advantage of the rich apps available on BlackBerry. The only solace is in the fact that QNX is an open source operating system and therefore it will be available for the developers to create apps for it.

PlayBook is still a few months away from the launch, so it is a bit early to come to a conclusion where it stands vis-à-vis Apple iPad. We will resume this discussion sometime early next year when the PlayBook is in the market.Till then, Apple iPad rules the tablet world!
