LCD vs LED Televisions

Home> Blogs> Televisions (TVs)> LCD vs LED Televisions

The respective confusion and debate between what an LCD or Liquid Crystal Display television and an LED or Light Emitting Diode television is and which one is better is as much the talk of the town as these technologies themselves are. There has been rapid penetration of the flat-panel TVs over past few years and this change has been encouraged by and has in turn also encouraged constant technological advancements. A buyer planning to spend a fortune on a new flat-panel TV, which is the case with quite a few of them, wants to be sure that not only would the TV he’ll buy serve him well but would also be the best option that exists in the market. That’s is precisely when one wants to be sure that there is no confusion in understanding the differences as well as similarities if any between two of the most important of television technologies of the day; LCD and LED.

Technological Aspects

The difference between LCD and LED televisions begins at the fundamental level itself with the technology behind the two being the deciding factor. An LCD television makes use of liquid crystals which have been compressed between two different glass plates with the image being produced whenever electricity is applied. In case of LCDs the light is produced through a combination of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which have been placed at the back of the screen.

An LED television can be considered to be an extension of LCD TV only since the display screen in case of the LED television is also a liquid crystal display. The difference lies in the use of light emitting diodes for lighting the LCD panel which makes them different than the traditional LCD televisions.

Within the respective categories of LCD as well as LED televisions there are many variations due to the variety of options of fluorescent lights in the case of LCD TVs and numerous LED backlighting styles in the context of LED TVs. Though LCD televisions as well as LED televisions form an important part of the range of TVs offered by almost all of the TV manufacturers, yet Sony, Samsung and LG are among the clear market leaders.

Comparative Feature Analysis

A feature by feature comparison of capabilities and performance of LCD and LED TVs ensures better understanding and finally better decision making for the users.

Contrast Ratio: LCD televisions score lower when the focus is on the contrast ratio as these suffer from the fact that these always have their backlight on whenever the TV is on. In fact this is one deficiency that LED TVs are trying to overcome by adopting the local dimming technology.

Viewing Angle: LCD televisions suffer from very low viewing angles, sometimes falling as low as 30 degrees. LED televisions have been able to correct this fallacy to a large extent and have a clear edge over the LCDs.

Color: LED televisions are better than LCDs if colors are taken into account especially when white and RGB LED backlight technology is taken into account.

Others: There are some other factors which are really important like the life and power consumption of the television. Since LED is rather an emerging technology and LCDs have been around for a while it is somewhat difficult and perhaps unfair too to make judgment based on these factors.
