Televisions, the number one source of home entertainment, form an essential part of every home. Cathode Ray Tube – Direct View TVs

Known by various names like direct view or CRT or simply tube TV, these televisions use a cathode ray tube as the picture device and have been part of almost everyone’s home. These offer good picture quality, are cheapest in price and have served the users for decades together. These suffer from bulky sizes and higher weight. Though the latest trend is shifting the consumer interest away from the CRT TVs, these have been part of our lives for a long time.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TVs

The fastest growing and the hot favorite of every user is the LCD television. Liquid Crystal Display has become the preferred choice of many mainly because of the sophisticated technology, thin size, light weight and resistance against burn-in. It is one of the most prominent ranges of offerings launched by all major television manufacturers. Digital Light Processing (DLP) TVs

DLP’s or the digital light processing televisions are technologically very advanced examples of TVs and have become part of the product offerings of all major manufacturers. These make use of a DMD chip or Digital Micromirror Device which is essentially an optical semiconductor which processes light digitally to ensure for the viewers a different and better kind of viewing experiencing. The technology was developed by Texas Instruments and the range of DLP TVs is part of the homes of rich and luxury hotels of repute. These are available in front projecting as well though rear projection is more popular.      

Plasma Display Panel (PDP) TVs

Plasma Display Panel televisions have carved out a niche of their own and have a very distinct clientele all over the world. These are offered as flat panel TVs and are known for ensuring the best quality of picture better than rest, most of the times. Though these are compact in size like the LCDs yet are heavier than expected. These are steadily expanding their reach and are becoming part of more and more homes.

Others:

In addition to the above listed variety of TVs there have been others which couldn’t be successful or are in development stage or are expected to dominate in future. SED or surface conduction electron display, LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and OLEDs (Organic LEDs) are some of the more popular examples of those. (LED TVs in India)
