Wristwatch - Analog vs. Digital

Home> Blogs> Wristwatches> Wristwatch - Analog vs. Digital

Wristwatch is a timepiece that is designed to be worn on the wrist. It has a dial, also known as the clock face, that displays the time and a strap or bracelet that is used to tie the watch around the wrist.

Watches can be categorized as Analog Watches or Digital Watches depending upon how they display the time on the dial.

Analog Watches

In case of Analog Watches, the dial sports a scale of 12 hours which usually analog watchalso serves as the minutes and seconds scale. Some watches offer separate scales for seconds. The numbers on the dial can be in various formats and designs. Analog Watches at least have two hands -- one for hours and other for minutes. The third hand for seconds is also quite common. Analog watches that have multiple scales, for showing international time or some other detail, need even more hands.

Just like the numbers on the dial, the rotating hands of an analog watch also come in different styles and that's what makes Analog Watches so interesting and popular. The traditional and collectible watches are almost always Analog Watches.

Digital Watches

Digital watches display the time in digital form. The earlier digital watches digital display watchused LED display and showed time only on demand to conserve the power. Latest digital watches use LCD dsplays which consume less power. Many watch makers offer unique functions into the digital watches like calculators, alarm, thermometers, televisions, data-sync however they vastly remain as pure timepieces.

These are the simplest watches that are more popular among kids and sports enthusiasts. Digital display does not offer much room for creativity so most digital watch dials look the same. Some of the recent digital watches offer a dual display where the second display shows the hours/minute hand digitally to add style. The basic digital watches are usually inexpensive.

Though the primary function of a watch is to show the time, many also show date, day, month, and year along with the time.

Most wrist watches use electronic quartz movement to keep track of hours, minutes, and seconds. The collectible watches on the other hand use more expensive mechanical movement technology.

Humm, nice article on Wristwatches - Analog vs. Digital. But for me combination of these 2 types of watches in a watch will be a better choice to have. I prefer dual kind of watches for me. :)
