Wristwatch Buying Tips

Wristwatches offer many exotic options to choose from. There are hundreds of watch brands in India all offering something unique. Even if you zero in on a watch brand, you have to decide upon the type of the watch based upon its technology, design, material type etc. When you step out for shopping for a wrist watch, you would definitely not like to be duped of your hard earned money. Believe it or not, even the most alert buyers can fall into the trap of crooks. So, to evade crooks, what are the necessary factors which one needs to consider before purchasing a wrist watch? Also, what are the other things which one needs to know before purchasing a watch? Let’s have a look into the issues which bother customers.

Do some research: Before buying, carefully analyse your needs and your budget. There is no upper and lower limit to the cost of watches. A cheap Chinese trash can cost Rs.20 whereas the upper limit for the price can be anywhere about a million dollars. If you are going to buy an expensive watch, then, browse the internet; collect information; talk to people who already own that brand of watch. If you decide to make an online purchase, trust only the reputed players in the online arena.

Know what kind of watch you want: While going to the market too, if you have an idea of what you wish to purchase, you would save yourself a lot of time and would come home with exactly what you wanted. Sales reps too take more interest in customers who seem to know what they want rather than those who start browsing the first thing that meets their eye.

Buy from an authorised dealer: Buying through an authorized dealer is the safest way to acquire any fine watch. Authorised dealers generally add their own warranty (apart from the warranty provided by the company) for two to three years. The customer can avail service at any service centre for the period during which the company provides warranty (normally one year). After this period, you dealer’s warranty applies. So, after one year if you face some problem, you can get it sorted out at you dealer’s showroom. However, dealer’s warranty can’t get your watch serviced at other service centres.

Buying through an authorised dealer ensures that you have no risk of receiving a fake, gray market, or serial-number-less watch. While many will initially quote you retail price, in many areas, you should be able to negotiate 10-20% off that price. Also, if you have the patience to browse the internet a bit, you can locate quite a few reputed authorized dealers for information about the watch. They also accept telephone orders and would send the product to you.

Gray Market Watches: These are those watches which are made by the original manufacturer, went through an unauthorized dealer and as a result, the warranties of the company do not apply. You must refrain from purchasing gray market watches.

Factors which one needs to keep in mind while buying a wristwatch:

Quality of the strap/bracelet: Customers generally become obsessed with the flashy dial. They tend to ignore the bracelet/strap quality in the process. The quality of the strap/bracelet is also not less important. If the strap is of some inferior material you would soon be found adjusting the position of your watch on your wrist every now and then. So, it’s better to double-check the quality of the material which goes into the strap/bracelet. Expensive watches are hand-crafted: This again is a misconception. Even Rolex watches are generally not. Most watches are machine manufactured. Also, machines offer greater precision and quality control. So, don’t be lured by claims that a particular company’s particular product line is hand crafted by skilled people. These claims are generally untrue. They are just made to make the exorbitant amount you are willing to spend on a quality watch justified.

Resale value of an expensive watch: There are quite a lot of factors which superficially seem to be affecting the resale value. Some of them include limited editions (they manufacture 10,000 pieces of them), fancy packaging, interesting serial numbers, etc. Also, watches made of expensive metals like gold or platinum depreciate much as the years pass by. Precious stones too command a significantly lower price when the time for resale comes. Also, resale value is drastically reduced for watches with poor durability or damaged serial numbers. Customized watches lower the resale value further. Who would like to buy your watch if you have inscribed your name or your family sign onto the watch?

Mechanical vs. Quartz: Generally, mechanical watches are higher priced as compared to their quartz counterparts of the same make and design. This is due to the fact that a mechanical watch has a higher probability of the need for repair. Also, since the masses buy quartz technology watches, so the circulation of mechanical watches is slow. Watch enthusiasts and collectors prefer mechanical. But, if you do not belong to either of the two and just want a fine watch, go for quartz.

Finally, take care of your wallet. Spend only to the extent which keeps you happy, both mentally and financially. There’s no point spending above your capacity if you later regret your decision.

You’ll be happy if you take care of the points mentioned above while buying a wrist-watch.
