You may be a busy executive, a student away from home or a professional mostly on the move, chances are if you don't own a laptop already, you must be thinking of buying one. It just may not be because all your peers fluant one, but because you really need a laptop. Why, people these days are in-fact buying laptops for using at their homes. Isn't it handy to take it to any other room or even the lawn or balcony!

Some people still believe that a desktop PC is more convenient with a larger keyboard, wider screen and has a more powerful processor. However, these days you can find laptops which match(at times exceed!) desktops in performance, while offering portablity at the same time. You might argue about price but now a days you can find a laptop at as low a price as Rs 15000. There are certainly high-end models available in the market which cost more than Rs One Lakh, but you need to buy according to your own need.

First you have to decide what you'd use the laptop for: surfing the net, word & excel(primarily office applications), gaming(needs enhanced multimedia performance), watching movies, listening to music, storing and editing photos and other such applications. You'll find laptop models available in India which cater to each of these user segments.

Similarly, choices galore in terms of size too. From the slim, ultra portable ones to the big and heavy ones, you can find them all. You again have to select the laptop depending on your usage and the functionalities you want in your notebook. The ultra portable ones might be easier to carry but you can't do much apart from web browsing and word processing(unless you are willing to pay a huge sum - more than a 1 lakh for it!), while the bulkier ones can pretty much replace the desktop.

Most importantly you have to decide upon the configuration of your notebook and you have to find out the answers to following questions:

  • Which processor to go in for?
  • How much system memory is required?
  • What should be the hard-drive capacity?
  • How much graphics memory is sufficient for my needs, do I actually need a dedicated graphics card for it?
  • What screen size would be optimum for my kind of use?
  • How about connectivity?
  • What would be the battery life, would I have to keep it plugged to the charger every time?

The answers to these and other similar questions would again depend upon your pattern of intended use and of course your budget!

We try to find out the best configuration in the various size options according to the kind of user you are:
