Inspite of global slowdown Indian job market has been going strong until recently. The campus recruitments were all time high. Salary, pay packages were soaring. Didn't matter which college or university you had a degree from, you had a job waiting. In fact, you had a job offer even one year before graduating. Many times you had multiple job offers and your challenge was to select the right one. IT services majors like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, HCL, Patni wanted to pick you before any other competitor laid its hands on you. They would pay anything to have you in their camps. You enjoyed all the crazy demand and your bloating value. If you were in IIT or IIM, you enjoyed even more attention. All major banking, finance, and insurance companies were after you with their fat salary offers. Your salary became the topic of discussion across many newspapers, magazines and blogs. But change is inevitable. Indian job market, today, is redefining itself. Global finance sector is going through toughest times ever affecting many other business including IT/BPO in India. The companies are grappling to keep their costs low in the wake of receding revenues and profit margins. The pink slip culture is in. The samba in the offices is out. Hiring is sluggish. Campus recruitment is worst hit. Those given job offers haven't received joining dates. At work, you are subjected to stricter performance measures. Workplaces have become more competitive. Work related stress has its own sad story to tell. Just being good is not good enough. We are approaching a phase where people in India will care about job security and job satisfaction more than the salary hikes.
